I’m always excited to come across great blogs, and Molly White’s blog is something special. Having found a voice as a crypto-skeptic, she’s turned out some excellent pieces on the world of crypto that are worth checking out!
Kid YouTube is like a cotton candy fever dream during an lsd trip.
I’d watch Better Call Saul for the cinematography alone. The incredible shot locations, the surgical scene blocking, the colour composition and lighting. Just stunning!
I can’t believe, after so many years as an Aeropress fan, that I only just today tried an inversion brewing method (or in my case Hoffman’s variation of it). It uses less coffee and produces a better outcome. Delicious!
Listening to @macroblank for the first time reminds me of when I first tried good olives: I’m pretty sure I like them, but I don’t know why and it’s very confusing…
I’m sad I only recently discovered @bandcamp. It’s delightful to idly browse and listen to random artists until you find something amazing. Way more engaging and deliberate than being pushed content through a streaming service.
Day before ski trip, car trouble (for the second time). We borrow a car. Day of ski trip phone dies. Find backup phone. Now that’s what I call luck!
The Wordle drama illustrates what’s wrong in the digital economy. Elon Musk “earns” 200B and he’s a visionary. @powerlanguish is rewarded for a game played for free by millions and he’s crucified.
Did you know that cache partitioning in modern browsers means loading shared assets (fonts, js libs) from a 3rd party CDN (e.g. Google) no longer offers significant performance gains while it compromises the privacy of your users?
Trying to brew coffee with my Moka Pot. Forgot to put in coffee basket. Puzzled why no coffee. Proof I need coffee.
I can’t help but wonder if the writers of Babylon 5 saw the MST3K riff of Laserblast before writing Infection…
Yesterday was the 45 anniversary of one my absolute favourite Pink Floyd albums: Animals. Much is made Gilmour’s virtuosity on the album but Waters’ writing is brilliant here, and would presage many great concept albums to come!
Happy birthday 10th, Bridgy! If you’re reading this on Twitter, that’s because of this wonderful project. Thank you so much, Ryan, and everyone who’s contributed!

Kudos to @MarmotBasin on the switch to RFID cards! Faster lift lines, online lift ticket purchases, no more need for a lift ticket dangling from your jacket, etc.

A beautiful letter from father to son before the son shipped out to World War 2. Amazing how these words from 80 years ago carry so much wisdom that we can use today.
My problem with work-from-home isn’t work-life balance. It’s difficulty compartmentalizing. Retaining the emotional distance that helps you avoid burn-out is hard when work and not-work feel the same.
Watched Idiocracy and Don’t Look Up as our New Years double feature. Folks weren’t kidding! Don’t Look Up is like Veep: supposed to be satire but just a little too real…
I periodically go through a caffeine fast to reset my coffee consumption. It’s worth it every time but man… the week of withdrawal symptoms is not a good time!
I fried my WASD keyboard with a static shock and considered building a new controller based on the wasdat (https://github.com/evyd13/wasdat) only to discover the ATMEGA32U4-AU has a 1 year lead time. Thanks chip shortage!
Finally started watched Ted Lasso and yup, I get the fandom! It really is delightful and reminds me of the spirit and energy that makes me love Community and Brooklyn 99.
You know, turkey is great, but there’s nothing like a home made turkey soup a couple of days later.
If you’ve never brined a turkey, you’ve gotta try it! It’s not a lot of work and the results speak for themselves.
In Die Hard McClane asks the security guard where his wife is. The guy has him look her up in the computer. Then afterward mentions everyone is at the Xmas party. So why have him use the computer??
Technically day three of holidays, but day one of not actively working… log4shell, truly the Christmas gift that keeps on giving!
Just got back from Spider-man, and yesterday we rewatched The Matrix trilogy so we’re ready for Resurrections! Gotta pack in some movies before holiday madness sets in…
A cozy space for the holidays.
The Moka Pot is the best. Because of the great coffee? No. Because it looks cool? No. Because it mixes brilliant engineering and physics to make something simple, durable, functional and eco-friendly!
Who would’ve guessed that when my mom was buying me all those pajama pants for Christmas over the years, she was actually just preparing me for a pandemic…
I cannot believe I only just got around to watching The Graduate. Cinematography, acting, writing, it really is utterly fantastic and absolutely hilarious!
I had my first Americano from @transcendcoffee in nearly two years. It was pure, caffeinated joy!
I ordered a @ViaScreens matte screen protector for my @FrameworkPuter and being able to simply remove the bezel to clean the screen and then perfectly apply the film from edge to edge is amazing!
I cannot begin to describe the rush of familiarity and nostalgia I experienced upon landing on this website…
I could never manage to get into Zep (more of a Floyd fan), but I’m giving it another shot! Been listening to the Mothership compilation and it might be growing on me. “When the Levee Breaks” has definitely earned a place on my favourites list.
It’s odd but satisfying when I discover a 15 year old project of mine remains useful to someone.
The Edmonton river valley in the fall is unfailingly stunning.

You know, as the outbreak has gotten worse here in Alberta, I realized just how much I’ve been doomscrolling and wallowing in bitter schadenfreude, and it has not been good for my anxiety levels…
An short article by the founder of Framework about the journey from conception to delivery!
And just like that I got my DIY edition laptop from Framework! Thanks @FrameworkPuter !
@CBCEdmonton blindly parroting @jkenney ‘s distorted talking points without criticism is the worst kind of yellow journalism. No one has proposed “[shutting] off a major, industrialized economy with the flick of a switch” and he knows it.
A belated photo of our lovely new front yard design! We couldn’t be happier with the way it came together!
Nice! For my blog I have a Calibre db containing metadata, covers, etc, for books. Then I wrote a Jekyll plugin that uses calibredb to pull the data out and populate my pages at build time. This reminds me I need to write a post about this…
Finally got around to planting my first little pot of succulents! My home office now looks just a little less sterile.
I’m loving my new @8bitdo controllers! I’ve wanted an arcade stick for as long as I can remember and this thing is great! And the M30 is pure joy for an old Sega Genesis fan.
Well, our home is host to another Robin’s nest. They sure do love this spot!
Following the lead of @CMOH_Alberta, we got ourselves some AstraZeneca! We couldn’t be happier!
First butterfly of the season, a beautiful Morning Cloak. Spring, you’ve finally sprung!
Just upgraded my Searx instance to 1.0.0 and it went perfectly. Thanks so much to all the maintainers and contributors for their hard work!
Huge shout out to The @internetarchive. Their large collection of old Wheel of Fortune episodes has been keeping my wife and I very entertained!
I wonder when the @Alberta_UCP and @JasonNixonAB will admit they’ve been lying about their park closure policy? Here we see they either don’t have usage data to back their policy, or they’re withholding it. Oops.
I can’t believe I only just discovered the joy of the @MST3K 24/7 Twitch channel… just in time for Turkey Day!
A beautiful Thursday riding solo at @MarmotBasin. I can’t think of a better way to socially distance!
Finally got a #DefendABParks sign. Gotta show support and make the @Alberta_UCP take notice.
Very nice intro piece on capital ‘S’ Stoicism and how deeply its misunderstood. I wouldn’t label myself a Stoic–I don’t spend nearly enough time on the topic–but it’s had a very profound effect on my own life.
Thank you, James Randi. You were a stalwart defender of facts and reason, something we can use that now more than ever. Thank goodness we have @jref to carry on your legacy.
Huge thanks to the @CanadaCraftClub for switching away from styrofoam to paper-based packaging! The foam packaging always troubled me and was the one thing that made me consider cancelling. Now I can have beer shipped to my door guilt-free(-er)!
First crack at Peter Reinhart’s Italian bread from BBA, in pull apart roll form. Turned out great!
Updated my Nintendo DS port of NetHack to upstream version 3.6.6! Why? Because I can, and I had some time over my lunch break, that’s why!
The ai thought leader on Twitter is now one of my favourite things (and also makes me want to play around with GPT2)…
More IoT devices bite the dust. I’ve avoided “smart” devices for a lot of reasons–lack of: security, control, cost, complexity, repairability–but rapid obsolescence is also a huge factor.
Spotted someone reading the Enchiridion on the bus and I had to fight not to strike up a conversation about Stoicism…
Another pair down! This yarn had been in my stash for a couple of years now, so it’s nice to get them done. Post to come with details, including how I converted this cuff down pattern to toe up.
After finishing my DIY keyboard project (http://b-ark.ca/MIYO2i) I’ve been trying to decide what I want to try as my next hardware hacking project, and this is definitely on the list…
A lot of things I post to Twitter start as notes on my blog so I host the content, but right now I don’t link back from the tweet to the note as I find it messy.
I don’t agree with all the advice here, but this is another reason to have my own blog, authored in Markdown, converted to static HTML and CSS.
